Why Train?

Every boy in the Scouting program needs and deserves a leader who understand the aims of the program and knows how to deliver it with enthusiasm and fun--in short a trained leader.  Take advantage of the available training opportunities.

Levels of training - Scouts provides a four level training plan.

Fast Start - Fast Start is the first level of training.  It provides information to aid new leaders in carrying out their responsibilities for the first few weeks.  The Fast Start tapes are separated into sections specific to your responsibilities.  To gain the most benefit from Fast Start, follow the self-study with personal coaching by a knowledgeable Scouter.  Fast Start Training should be completed before the leader conducts their first meeting.

Basic Training - Basic training is designed to give job-related information to all Scout leaders.  It is a course which introduces some skills, but the skills are enhanced with continual use.  All Scout leaders should take Basic Training as soon as possible after assuming the roles or changing roles (preferably within the first two months).

Supplemental Training - Because of the time involved, basic leader training covers few topics in detail.  Basic training is designed to encourage leaders to take part in supplemental training.  Supplemental training gives additional information on specific areas of the Scouting program.  Training such as monthly roundtables are held on a regular basis and provide a continuing source of program information.  The Leadership Updates are designed to enhance your training experience by offering additional and updated program features to Scout leaders.  Other supplemental training courses are held to meet the needs of specific leaders.  University of Scouting is a major supplemental training experience and is usually held once a year.  National supplemental training is offered each summer at Philmont Scout ranch in New Mexico.
