FALL Do-It To-It Workday

October 13

CAMP RED WING COMMITTEE CHAIR Mike Dowd

The FALL Do-It To-It Workday is Saturday, October 13, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm .  Come and help us get the camp ready for the spring and summer programs.  We guarantee you will go home feeling tired and feeling very good that you helped make a difference at Camp Red Wing.  So make us part of your annual calendar.  The Do-It To-It Workday 2008 schedule is: Saturday, April 19 and Saturday, October 18.

DISTRICT COMMISSIONER Karen Goth

Congratulations go to Bill Hoffert, one of the Unit commissioners in Golden Eagle District, for completing the practical portion of Wood Badge advanced leader training this year C-14-07.  Bill has set embarked upon an ambitious journey for the next several months to improve relations between the Commissioners in our district and units, unit leaders, parents, and scouts.  It takes teamwork for anything to succeed, and that includes communication between the commissioners and the great units and leaders.  Expect to see some surveys in the near future as Bill tries to work his “ticket”.  And also expect to see stronger communication as a direct result.  We desperately need your input to for the Scouting program to work well in our district. Remember the New Leader Essentials video – “you are not alone”.  There is no I in team!

Now that school nights have come and gone, and the main portion of recruiting is finished for the year (do we ever really stop trying to get more youth involved?), has your unit gotten all of the new leaders trained for their positions? Have you conducted an annual planning meeting?  Going to summer camp next year?  Really looked at your budgetary needs?  Are you selling popcorn?  Do you just plain need some help with all of this “stuff”?  Call your unit commissioner!  We are here to help, and the above mentioned things are part of what it takes to make a successful unit have a successful year.  We can do an Ideal Year of Scouting presentation for your unit, or attend a committee meeting to assist you with program planning, or just be a resource.

Quality Unit Commitment sheets for 2007 should have been turned in already.  This is still a requirement, not an option.  The new sheets for 2008 will be ready in November, and they are going back to the 3 part form.  They will need to be completed and turned in before February 28th.  Please call if you have any questions about how to fill them out.  And think of them as a tool to use to make your unit better, not just another form to fill out.

It’s not too early to start thinking about our Golden Eagle District awards.  They are not due to be turned in until the end of December or early January, but think about nominating someone that you think does an outstanding job in Scouting for your unit, for our District, or just in general.  There are several awards that may be given, and we know there are many deserving leaders out there.  This is a great way to say thank you – we really do appreciate everything you do!

GOLDEN EAGLE DISTRICT FALL CAMPOREE

October 5 - 7

If you weren’t at the Fall Camporee, you missed a great one.  But you’ll not be able to go to Camp Red Wing and find where we were because we all tried to…

Take Only Memories – Leave No Trace

Camp Red Wing -- October 5-7, 2007

Is it possible to hold a district camporee and leave no trace that we were ever there?  Not even any bags of garbage in the dumpster?  We almost did!  Somebody snuck a couple bags of garbage into the dumpster, and the grass in the activity field was a bit trampled, but that should be back to normal by now.  But considering there were nearly 225 of us there from more than 15 units, it wasn’t bad.

We all can learn more, although sometimes we have a hard time admitting it.  This camporee both educated and tested all of us in fun ways about advanced camping skills related to being active in the outdoors, yet leaving no trace that we were ever there.  We learned how to visit, Take Only Memories and Leave No Trace.  This camporee was conducted based on the Outdoor Code and the seven Leave No Trace principles.

Outdoor Code

As an American, I will do my best to be clean in my outdoor manners, be careful with fire, be considerate in the outdoors, and be conservation-minded.

Principles of Leave No Trace

   Plan Ahead and Prepare

Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces

   Dispose of Waste Properly

   Leave What You Find

   Minimize Campfire Impacts

   Respect Wildlife

   Be Considerate of Other Visitors

What made this Golden Eagle District camporee unique?

·         The Saturday night campfires (yes, there were two)  were built in an open field on a mound of dirt and a raised sheet of metal such that, by the time we left Sunday morning, we were not able to tell we had any campfires.

·         We presented awards on Saturday night before the campfire program, and then presented Wood Badge Beads to Cheryl Underhill , Brian Naylor and Ginny Jennings.

·         The garbage dumpster was virtually empty.

·         Scouts (and adults!) learned advanced camping and outdoor skills at round robin stations Friday night and Saturday morning and were “tested” at stations Saturday afternoon.

·         Every paid attendee received a plastic Leave No Trace reference “hang card” for their backpack and a pocket card of the Outdoor Code.

·         One person in every paid and attending unit will receive an introductory one-year membership in the Leave No Trace organization.

·         We had 90 degree weather!

I truly am thankful for all of the nearly thirty volunteers that helped me bring this camporee to life.  I want to especially thank the six individuals who planned the activities for the six round-robin stations: Clayton McKnight, Karen Goth , Cheryl Underhill , Scott Eiser, Jon Fischer and Frank Turner.

I hope that all in attendance left with a renewed sense of urgency and increased knowledge of how to Take Only Memories and Leave No Trace.

DISTRICT PROGRAM CHAIR Jack Spears

Leave No Trace Fall Camporee 2007.  Thanks go out to Dave Largent and his Staff for a great Fall Camporee.  Nearly 250 Scouts and Scouters attended this sun filled weekend where the Scouts had a grand opportunity to learn how to hike and camp using the “Leave No Trace” techniques. Classes, demonstrations and testing allowed the patrols to come together in a fun way to show what they can do. They were also required to camp using the things that they had learned.

Dave Largent looks on – taking only memories and leaving no trace.

…and remember – wherever you go and what ever you do – always be a GOOD SCOUT !

Jack Spears – G.E. District Program Chair.

Family Friends of Scouting 2007

Can you believe it is that time of year already?! The annual Friends of Scouting Campaign is starting up soon! The Family portion of the campaign plays a very vital part in the overall success of the campaign, and keeps Scouting alive and well in Golden Eagle!  Please schedule a presentation as soon as possible.  To get your presentation on the calendar please contact Megan Luecke at the office at 765-288-0223.  Thank you!

Roundtable

Please make an effort to attend Roundtable. It is a great continued training for all adult leaders. Please send a representative to the First Presbyterian Church on University in Muncie on the second Thursday of every month at 7pm . This is a great resource for ideas and information, not to mention a great avenue to talk to other leaders in the district about concerns, issues and how they have done things. I strongly encourage all leaders and units to attend and take advantage of this opportunity. Any questions contact the scout office at 765-288-0223. Thanks!

DISTRICT Public Relations Chair Tim Underhill

Public relations is a constant process and you should always be thinking of how to get your scouting related ideas publicized. Let’s take a look at one way to get the media interested in covering your event.

What makes your event different or unusual? It’s the man bites dog story that gets attention, not the dog bites man. Quirky or unusual stories are interesting and can attract the interest of not only the media, but also the public in general.

I was cleaning my computer and found this image I created. It’s based on the motivational posters you may have seen. I used a photo I took of Ian McIver in his old Scout uniform. Feel free to use it how you see fit. I thought it might work on the website somewhere.

Storytelling

Storytelling is a powerful way to communicate and it’s the same for Scouting. We need stories to tell the impact Scouting is having on young lives. That’s where you come in. If you know of a compelling story about how Scouting has changed a life, we want to let everyone know. It can be a “Scouts In Action” story that shows a Scout using skills learned in the program to save a life or something much simpler. Maybe there’s an Eagle service project that will make a big difference in the community.

The best stories use emotion to get the point across. It’s another excellent way to tell the story of Boy Scouts in our community.

We know what kind of impact the Scouting program has on our youth. Now it’s time to spread the word.

SCOUTING IN THE EARLY DAYS

BE PREPARED – it’s the Boy Scout Motto!

Kiwanis Lodge 1976

Kiwanis Lodge # 2.  The first Kiwanis Lodge was built in 1958.  It was destroyed by fire in 1974.  It was quickly determined that a new lodge was needed and the Kiwanis Club offered to help.  In 1976 a group of volunteers and construction crews came together for this project.  Insurance of about $30,000.00 paid for most of the material and a professional crew to erect the shell.  Volunteers finished the project bringing the value of material and labor up to around $70, 00.00.

Notice the size of the trees.  Many are still standing near the lodge
