Notes from your Commissioners

Congratulations on one of the best re-chartering seasons we have had in quite some time!  It takes every one of us doing our small part of the overall job to “get er done”, and we did it.

Summer is here, it is finally warm, and one day it might even be dry!   What great weather for camping and outdoor activities!!  Make sure that you let the Scout Office know if you are doing your own summer camp program, or if you are attending a high adventure trip somewhere.

Summer is a great time to do your yearly planning. Before you know it, school will be starting again and we will be in full swing for a new season of events.  Now is the time to start planning for it.   Get together and do a rough draft of all the activities you want to do over the next year.  “Guestimate” how many new youth you think might join your unit – Packs, don’t forget that you will have lots of new boys coming in the August/September/October time frame.  This is also a great time to consider how many new leaders your unit will need.  Try to come up with names to fill the empty spots.  Think of “leadership succession” planning.  Planning ahead is planning to have a great unit.  Finding great leaders this year will allow for them to know the ropes when they start next year, and allows for better program for our kids!  Use the program planning tools available on the Crossroads of America Council website http://www.crossroadsbsa.org/FunctionsofScoutingMenu/ActivitiesCivicService/UnitProgramPlanning/tabid/439/Default.aspx  for budget and activity planning. “Plan your work, then work your plan!”

BOY SCOUTS AND WEBELOS – Look for a late summer/early fall event at Morrow’s Meadow’s in Yorktown .  Boy Scout troops can strut their stuff, and Webelos can come join the fun and see what it is all about.  The public can see just how alive Scouting is in Golden Eagle district!  More information will be coming out soon regarding this event.  We would like for troops to assist and commit to helping us put on an outstanding show!

Finally, GET ACTIVE IN OUR DISTRICT AND HELP US PROMOTE THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF SCOUTING!  This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity.  Parents, ask businesses to put a brochure stand on the counter.  Units taking part in 100th anniversary events are called Action Units, and every person who participates gets a special patch.  This year only. There is one 100th birthday so let’s make the most of it.  We also still need information for several units as to unit contacts for the BecomeAScout website.  This plan can work if we let it.

The home for Roundtables will be changing next year to the High Street Methodist Church.  We will still hold Roundtable at Camp Redwing in August, September, January, and May.  Come learn about program, Cub Scouts – learn about the new program delivery system and see how you can present it.  This is one of the best ways to get information!

Have a great summer.  See you all at the Roundtable Kick Off, August 12 at Camp Redwing .
