Indian Jim Gateway

Indian Jim has been a symbol used in identifying Camp Red Wing since 1959. The creation was a gift from cartoonist Tom Ryan.  This gateway was used at a National Boy Scout Jamboree and has been used at Camp Red Wing on numerous occasions.

Frank Turner Troop 60 has volunteered to do this project.

DO-IT-TO-IT

By Jack Spears

Our Spring DO-IT-TO-IT Workday was again a successful occasion. Many thanks go out to the volunteers who helped get the camp ready for our summer programs.  Buildings were cleaned on the inside and paint was applied to the outside.   Trees were trimmed and wood was cut for fires.  A special thank you goes out to the Firecrafter who provided lunch.  The extra effort put forth helps to make Camp Red Wing a better place for all.

DISTRICT EXECUTIVE Megan Luecke

It’s that time of year again! Each unit needs to schedule a Fall School Night now and get it on the calendars. After you have done so, please contact either Kathy Morrison at 765-286-2094 or Leslie Anderson or Megan Luecke at 765-288-0223. Scheduling now will make things much easier in the Fall!

Also to go along with that, each unit should schedule and plan next year’s activities and outings before the School Night in the Fall in order to give parents and new Scouts a calendar so they know all of the fun activities that they will be doing throughout the year. For more information or for training contact Megan Luecke at the office at 765-288-0223. Planning now ensures a quality program for the youth as well as eliminating out of pocket expenses for parents.

SCOUTING IN THE EARLY DAYS

BE PREPARED – it’s the Boy Scout Motto!

Participation in parades has always been a way the Scouting movement has presented itself to the public.  This well uniformed Den Mother from Yorktown marches down Walnut Street in Muncie during the 1960’s.  Notice the full Cub uniforms worn by the two Scouts next to her.  In the background the boys from Pack 3 are dressed as Native Americans.

-          Wahpekahmekunk Chapter of the Order of the Arrow recently welcomed seventeen new Ordeal members and one new Brotherhood member during the Spring Ordeal, May 9-11, at Camp Red Wing.  The new Ordeal members are Cody Allen, Brandon Blackmer, James Campbell, Cory Cannaday, Travis Cleveland, Matthew Hignite, Brody Kanouse, Jacob Martin, Bruce McKeighen, Joseph Railey, Blake Rains, Anthony Reese, Brady Reese, Zach Thornbro, Matt Wallace, Cory Warfel, and Joseph Zeiler.  Sealing his ties in Brotherhood was John Wilkerson.  Friday evening started off with the threat of rain, but by bedtime the skies started to clear and the stars came out.  Two major work projects included rebuilding the campfire fire ring and rerouting the river trail by the Chapel away the river’s edge due to erosion.  Dinner was served Saturday evening after the completion of the Brotherhood and Ordeal ceremonies.  Thank-you Scott Eiser for all the great meals served over the weekend.  This event was a success due to the efforts of the co-Ordealmasters Abe Underhill and Blake Hall.  Aaron Craig and Dave Largent led the ceremony teams, which included Ken Brooks, Robert Cooper, John Keesling, Ben Jennings, Dakota Craig, Blake Hall, and Abe Underhill .  Ginnie Jennings was in charge of registration, Tim Underhill ran the trading post, and Dennis McKeighen was the first aid officer.  Also helping during the weekend were camp ranger Terry McConnell, Fred Gross, Karen Goth, Paul Stout, Marc Chatot, and Thomas Starkey.  My apologies if I forgot anyone.

-           A reminder to those elected into the OA and unable to attend the Spring Ordeal, this fall the Jaccos Towne Lodge will have its Fall Ordeal at Camp Red Wing, September 19-21.  Also, any Ordeal member who has been an Arrow man for ten months is eligible to seal their ties to Brotherhood at the Lodge Ordeal.

-           At the WPK chapter meeting on May 11, a committee was formed to start planning activities for meetings starting again in September.  New officers will be nominated and elected this fall.  Meeting dates for the rest of the year are as follows:  September 14, October 4(during Fall Camporee), November 9, and December 7 at 2:30 pm in the Kiwanis Lodge at Camp Red Wing unless noted otherwise.

-          Upcoming Lodge events this fall are as follows:  September 19-21, Lodge Ordeal & Vigil, October 17-19, Fall Fellowship and Elections, November 14-16, Lodge Leadership & Development, December 14, Lodge Winter Banquet.
