Post 1720

This past weekend, (July 19-20) robotics teams came from far and wide to play at IRI, Indiana Robotics Invitational. Teams from Canada , Hawaii , California , Wisconsin , New York , Texas , and many throughout the Midwest joined in the fun. Fourteen teams were Regional and National champions from the 2008 FIRST season, so Team 1720 knew we had our work cut out for us. National champion Team #1114, from Ontario , Canada , was very much a major player, as were all of the regional champions. Competition was tough!!

After two days of competition, and 8 matches, we won 5 of our 8 matches and ended up in 34th place overall. This rank is VERY significant, since the top 8 teams select 3 additional partners for the final matches, with a net result of 32 teams playing in the final rounds. The final rounds were TOUGH and very exciting!  There were many agile and well-built robots all performing at their best.

Team 1720 has worked EXTREMELY hard since the Boilermaker Regional Competition, held at Purdue University in March. You may recall that we did not fare very well at that competition and were plagued by mechanical problems throughout the competition. We designed a very complicated robot! Our goal at IRI was to prove that our robot "Sparky" was a great robot, could do the task as assigned, and do it well. Since March, we worked hard, making adjustments and upgrades, rewriting the programs which controlled the bot, and learning a great deal about what works and why. IRI was to be our test, so to speak. We DID make a great robot, and not only did it did WORK, but Sparky worked WELL!

Competing against top teams in the nation, The PhyXTGears fared in the top HALF. Team 1720 is quite content, knowing that while competing against strong and winning teams from all around the country, we could play hard and play well. Ranking above half of the field was a good feeling, and proof that our hard work and great engineering pays off!

A few possible newcomers to the team joined us for the day, and learned a great deal about the competition. Please consider joining or supporting this great group of youth and adults, to participate and/or mentor the students, to enhance technology education for our community. We learn by doing, and have fun at the same time - IRI is proof of that.
