Medieval Times

Spring Camporee - May 2-4, 2008

Camp Red Wing

Join Our Crusade Now, Adventure Awaits!

Come, but come only if ye be men of valor!

Years ago, in the Mystical Country of Red Wing, Family Clans from all the surrounding countries merged together for a great Renaissance Festival. Crusaders, back from their Pilgrimages, joined with them to celebrate their triumphant victories.  Local Craftsmen set up their shops to demonstrate their trades of Leatherworking, Woodworking, and Blacksmithing.  There were many Athletic Competitions for the Warriors including Archery, Spear Throwing, Caber Tossing, Putting the Stone and Axe Throwing.  The day was filled with Music, Shields, Banners, Color, and Festivity.  In the evening the Merry Gentlemen and their Ladies gathered for a great Feast of Roasted Pig.

You are invited to live these Medieval Times with us.  Place this Gala Event on your Scout Units Calendar.       Invite the WEBELOS DENS.

Indian Jim Gateway

Indian Jim has been a symbol used in identifying Camp Red Wing since 1959. The creation was a gift from cartoonist Tom Ryan.  This gateway was used at a National Boy Scout Jamboree and has been used at Camp Red Wing on numerous occasions.

The gateway is in need of a new paint job and some new hardware.  If anyone is interested in doing a restoration please contact the Camp Ranger or email me at jspears512@sbcglobal.net

Spring Do-It To-It Workday

Saturday, April 19.

9:00 am to 4:00 pm

Cleaning inside and out.  There is much to do and we can use all the help we can get.  So, come out and get your camp ready for the season of fun for our scouts.

DISTRICT COMMISSIONER Karen Goth

DON’T MISS THE WHITE ELEPHANT GIFT EXCHANGE AT OUR MAY ROUNDTABLE

Is spring ever going to get here?  Well, that is what I think is on all of our minds.  What can we do with all that spare time?  Spring housecleaning, of course.  But what else?  How about doing some clean up for your units.  Make sure that your program is going according to plan.  Set up additional leader training, or plan an extra event for the youth in your group.  Have you signed up for summer camp yet?  This is the time of year to do that, whether you are a Cub Scout pack, Boy Scout troop, Team, or a Venture Crew, summer camp plays a big part in building strong people.  If you aren’t going to go to a council sponsored summer camp program, are you planning some other sort of summer time experience?  Let us know so it can be recorded, and marked as part of your Quality Unit commitment.  Whether it is a trip to Boundary Waters, Philmont, The Appalachian mountains , or a weeklong trip in Missouri paddling down a river, it counts towards the outdoor experience.  And that is where memories and learning experiences come from.

Need some help?  Call your unit commissioner!  We are here to help, and the above mentioned things are part of what it takes to make a successful unit have a successful year.

We are looking for people who want to help with units.  All of the commissioner staff is not listed above, but these are the “directors” so to speak.  Our ratio should actually be 3 units to every commissioner.  We need several more people to help us in helping units succeed.  Commissioner staff is communication and caring, helping to build the strong units that we all want to have.  Like it says in New Leader Essentials, “you are not alone”.  Being a commissioner is a great way to meet other scouters, use the knowledge and experience you have gotten along the way and learn how to do some things differently or better than you do them now.  It is a very rewarding position. Right now we desperately need people to help us in the New Castle area and in Muncie with our Urban units.   If you know of anyone who is interested in participating on commissioner staff, please contact me.  I would like to see one person from every unit signed up as a unit commissioner – what a great way to make sure that you are always up to date with information!

ROUNDTABLE INFO- April roundtable is at the Riverside Presbyterian Church on Thursday April 10th at 7:00pm .  The May roundtable and summer kick off will be held at Camp Redwing on Thursday May  8th.  We will have our traditional carry in meal, and a White Elephant gift exchange.  Bring an inexpensive white elephant gift to exchange and have some fun!  Get last minute information on summertime happenings, and make those last minute plans.  Be there or be square!

DON’T FORGET TO SIGN UP FOR CAMP!!!

What is White Stag Junior Leader Training?  It is White Stag National Youth Leadership Training!

White Stag is a seven-day outdoor experience for youth leaders in support of the Scoutmaster's responsibility for the training of troop junior leaders. The council leadership training committee conducts White Stag using an outline approved by the Boy Scout Division of the Boy Scouts of America.

Scouting recognizes that Scoutmasters have the responsibility of training their own junior leaders. The purpose of White Stag is not to assume that role, but to support it. The objectives of White Stag are:

bulletTo give participants the confidence and knowledge to run the troop program.
bulletTo give participants a basic knowledge of the eleven skills of leadership and help them relate these skills to their home troop responsibilities.
bulletTo give participants the opportunity to share ideas and experiences with Scouts from other troops.
bulletTo create an atmosphere where Scouts will experience Scouting at it's best.
bulletTo enhance the relationship between the Scoutmaster and the participant.
bulletTo have fun.

The next White Stag Training is:

Location:   Camp Red Wing, Muncie , IN

Date:           June Session:   June 8th - 14th 2008

               July Session:    July 20th - 26th 2008

SCOUTING IN THE EARLY DAYS

BE PREPARED – it’s the Boy Scout Motto!

-           EAGLE’ S KNOB is the oldest building at Camp Red Wing.  It was erected in 1933 as a gift from Mrs. Mae Clark Robbins and son Richard in memory of son Ned Robbins.  It is made from logs taken from old log homes from this area. While digging the foundation for Eagle’s Knob, the remains of an Indian were found at the base of a tree.  He was reburied in a concrete vault under the northeast corner of the cabin.                                            This photo was taken during the winter of 1934.

 Spring Ordeal

The Wahpekahmekunk(WPK) Chapter of the Order of the Arrow is gearing up for the Spring Ordeal May 9-11 at Camp Red Wing.  Troop elections should all be done and the newly elected candidates need to attend their WPK Chapter Ordeal either this spring at Camp Red Wing or this fall at Jaccos Towne Lodge Fall Ordeal at Camp Red Wing, September 19-21.  Candidates should receive a letter in the mail explaining what they need to bring.  Arrowmen who have been members for 10 months are eligible to tie their OA bond by fulfilling their Brotherhood requirements listed in the OA Handbook. All current OA members are encouraged to attend this spring to do service at Camp Red Wing and help on registration, set up, ceremony teams, cook crew, and brotherhood conversion.  If there are any questions, please contact me at 765-215-4276 or jefischer@iquest.net.   Cheerfully, Jon Fischer, Chapter Adviser.

Indian Lore Merit Badge

On March 15 at Camp Red Wing, the OA held an Indian Lore Merit Badge class.  David Largent was in charge of selecting the requirements so the Badge could be earned in one sitting.  Due to conflicts not everyone was able to complete all of the requirements.  We started at 8:00 am and finished around 3:00 pm .

David Largent explaining the requirements and some of his resources.

OA Dues

Do you know when your dues expire?  Several years ago you were able to pay for 5 years at a time.  Now you can only pay for a year at a time.  To be considered active you must have a paid BSA registration and have your dues current.  Dues expire at the end of every year, December 31.  You can contact me if you have any questions about your dues.

Yours in Brotherhood, Jon Fischer, WPK Chapter Adviser, jefischer@iquest.net,, Home:  288-9051, Work:  284-8511
